We are Benjamin Franklin Elementary Mathematics and Science School located at 1116 Jefferson Avenue for grades PK through 5 and 401 Nashville Avenue for grades 6 through 8 in Uptown New Orleans. It is a joy to be a part of a warm, nurturing, child centered environment. We are a learning community, seizing every opportunity to enrich the lives of not only our students, but our faculty, staff, parents, and community. We are data driven and are building on our strengths while addressing our weaknesses. Our students are intelligent motivated individuals striving for excellence. We serve pre-kindergarten through eighth grade students from diverse backgrounds as well as special needs students and second language learners.
There is a family atmosphere at Baby Ben. Our sense of community, the quiet sense of purpose in the hallways, and the enthusiastic, engaging classrooms are well known trademarks of our school. As principal, I have set high expectations and standards for the academic and social development of all students and the performance of adults. Our school community shares the responsibility for student and school success.
As a servant leader, I am proud to lead this school forward carrying out our motto, "Beyond expectations".
Charlotte Matthew, Principal
What makes Benjamin Franklin Elementary Mathematics and Science School unique?
We are not the Pre Katrina Benjamin Franklin selective admission school. Since Katrina, our population has more than doubled as we have well over 800 students now. We take all children, grades PK – eighth. We give all children an opportunity for a high quality education. We embrace our special needs students and have an outstanding inclusion program. Our ESL students flourish. You can ask any child in the building what our mission statement is and they know it. Ask anyone what our alma mater is and they can sing it. Ask anyone what our school creed is and they can recite it. We are a child centered community of continuous learners, adults and children. We operate as a family. We have a wonderful PTO and great relationship with our parents and community. We carry out our Motto –Beyond Expectations.
We are a professional learning community. We have monthly Professional Development. We also have weekly grade level or content area planning. We make decisions, review curriculum, share resources, vent and celebrate together every week. We talk about intervention and acceleration strategies. We plan school trips and social outings. These weekly meetings ensure that every student in our school gets the benefit of all of the brains. Also, no teacher is left behind as planning and sharing takes place.
